The KIA Tigers took down the ‘front-running’ LG Twins in the first doubleheader of the season.
Swept LG Twins 12-7 in the second game of a doubleheader in the 2023 Shinhan Bank Solar KBO League at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field on Monday.
After securing a close 7-6 win in the first game of the doubleheader, 한국야동 KIA swept the second game to move into fourth place (59 wins, 2 ties, 52 losses).
Top-ranked LG (70 W-2, 46 L), which had set a season-high 70 wins the day before, faltered with two losses in one day.
KIA showed off its firepower in the second game, scoring 12 runs on 17 hits.
Veteran Choi Hyung-woo

In the bottom of the fifth, KIA loaded the bases with consecutive hits by Na Sung-beom, Socrates Brito, and Kim Sun-bin. Go Jong-wook made it a one-run game with a single up the middle off LG reliever Park Myung-geun.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, pinch-hitter Choi Hyung-woo took advantage of Park’s fastball for a grand slam over the right field fence. It was the game-winning hit.
Once again, KIA scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run homer by Na Sung-bum, a wild pitch and a single to left by Lee Chang-jin.
Was unable to prevent the loss as starter Son Ju-young was pulled after 1⅔ innings of three runs (one earned) and the middle relievers Lee Woo-chan (0 innings, three runs), Park Myung-geun (1 inning, two runs), and Oh Seok-joo (1 inning, four runs) all fell apart.

Off with a double to right-center and Kim Joo-won followed with a single to right. With runners on first and third, Choi Jung-won tied the game with a grounder to the second baseman. Second baseman Niko Gudrum opted to throw home, but third baseman Oh Young-soo came home first.
Son As-seob walked to load the bases, and Seo Ho-cheol followed with a two-run single to right field for the final run of the game.
NC’s third pitcher, Kim Young-gyu, was lucky to get the save after giving up one run in the first inning.

Who pitched a scoreless ninth inning, became the 10th player in KBO history to record 150 career saves.
In Jamsil, the Doosan Bears won the second game of a doubleheader against the Samsung Lions 4-0 behind Brandon Waddell’s complete-game shutout.
Sixth-ranked Doosan improved to 58-1 and 57-57 on the season, while ninth-ranked Samsung moved to 51-1 and 68-68.
After dropping Game 1, 1-5, behind eight innings of one-run relief from Samsung’s David Buchanan, Doosan turned to Brandon in Game 2.
Brandon, who started Game 2, shut down the Samsung bats with seven innings of two-hit ball, four walks and seven strikeouts to improve to 8-3 on the season.
Doosan broke a 0-0 tie with a three-run third inning to take the lead.

After an 11-2 sweep in game one of the doubleheader, Hanwha won game two 3-1. With two wins in one day, eighth-ranked Hanwha (49W6D62L) extended its winning streak to five games.
Last-place Kiwoom (51W3D76L) fell to a six-game losing streak.
Unlike Hanwha’s onslaught in Game 1, Game 2 was a more even affair. With the score tied at 0-0, the teams shared a point in the fifth inning.
Hanwha scored first.
In the top of the fifth, Choi Jae-hoon walked, Lee Do-yoon sacrificed, and Moon Hyun-bin hit an infield single to put runners on first and third, and Oh Sun-jin singled to right.
Kiwoom tied the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Kim Joo-hyung and Kim Hye-sung singled, Lee Ju-hyung was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Song Sung-moon hit a grounder to first base. First baseman Chae Eun-sung, who caught the ball, threw home and the runner from third scored to tie the game.
However, the 1-1 balance would not last long.
Hanwha scored again in the seventh inning.
Two batters later, Oh Sun-jin’s line drive bounced off shortstop Kim Joo-hyung and into left field. With two outs, Noh Si-hwan hit a fly ball to center field, but center fielder Ronnie Dawson lost the ball and it became a hit. In the meantime, first baseman Oh Sun-jin ran home to extend the lead.
