KIA jumps to No. 4 in doubleheader with LG, SSG falls to No. 5

The KIA Tigers took down the ‘front-running’ LG Twins in the first doubleheader of the season.

Swept LG Twins 12-7 in the second game of a doubleheader in the 2023 Shinhan Bank Solar KBO League at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field on Monday.

After securing a close 7-6 win in the first game of the doubleheader, 한국야동 KIA swept the second game to move into fourth place (59 wins, 2 ties, 52 losses).

Top-ranked LG (70 W-2, 46 L), which had set a season-high 70 wins the day before, faltered with two losses in one day.

In the bottom of the fifth, KIA loaded the bases with consecutive hits by Na Sung-beom, Socrates Brito, and Kim Sun-bin. Go Jong-wook made it a one-run game with a single up the middle off LG reliever Park Myung-geun.

With the bases loaded and nobody out, pinch-hitter Choi Hyung-woo took advantage of Park’s fastball for a grand slam over the right field fence. It was the game-winning hit.

Once again, KIA scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run homer by Na Sung-bum, a wild pitch and a single to left by Lee Chang-jin.

Off with a double to right-center and Kim Joo-won followed with a single to right. With runners on first and third, Choi Jung-won tied the game with a grounder to the second baseman. Second baseman Niko Gudrum opted to throw home, but third baseman Oh Young-soo came home first.

Son As-seob walked to load the bases, and Seo Ho-cheol followed with a two-run single to right field for the final run of the game.

NC’s third pitcher, Kim Young-gyu, was lucky to get the save after giving up one run in the first inning.

Brandon, who started Game 2, shut down the Samsung bats with seven innings of two-hit ball, four walks and seven strikeouts to improve to 8-3 on the season.

Doosan broke a 0-0 tie with a three-run third inning to take the lead.

Unlike Hanwha’s onslaught in Game 1, Game 2 was a more even affair. With the score tied at 0-0, the teams shared a point in the fifth inning.

In the top of the fifth, Choi Jae-hoon walked, Lee Do-yoon sacrificed, and Moon Hyun-bin hit an infield single to put runners on first and third, and Oh Sun-jin singled to right.

Kiwoom tied the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Kim Joo-hyung and Kim Hye-sung singled, Lee Ju-hyung was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Song Sung-moon hit a grounder to first base. First baseman Chae Eun-sung, who caught the ball, threw home and the runner from third scored to tie the game.

However, the 1-1 balance would not last long.
