High school girl’s ‘Olympic record’ pistol gold is followed by Hyo Jin Ban
Yeo Gap-soon Hyun, who was in the third grade at Seoul Chegyo High School at the time of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, won South Korea’s first Olympic gold medal.
Yeo competed in the women’s air rifle event and beat out the world’s best to win the first gold medal of the Games.
Then, at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, a “shooting fairy” appeared.
Kang won a silver medal in women’s air rifle when she was in the third grade at Yuseong Girls’ High School, and went on to become a national star, helping to popularize the sport.
Now, a young high school girl, holding a rifle just like her elders, is aiming for the gold medal bull’s-eye at the Paris Olympics.
Ban Hyo-jin, 17, a sophomore at Daegu Chee High School, will try to win a medal in the women’s 10-meter air rifle final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the Chateauroux Shooting Center in France on Monday (June 29).
It’s 4:30 p.m., perfect for TV viewing.
Ban is the first high school athlete to compete at the Olympics in 20 years and the youngest Olympic competitor in shooting history.
He first started shooting in the summer of 2021 during the Tokyo 2020 Games, and within three years, he had beaten out countless seniors to qualify for the Paris Olympic trials.
After failing to qualify for the finals in the mixed air rifle event on Sunday, Ban unleashed her genius in the air rifle main event on Monday.
Her 60-shot total of 634.5 points earned her first place overall.
In addition, she set a new Olympic Games record, surpassing the previous Olympic record of 632.9 set by Janet Heg Dustad (NOR) at Tokyo 2020.
The Korean shooting team was encouraged by the performance of their “secret weapon,” Ban Hyo-jin’s vaulting.
Virtually unknown outside of South Korea, Ban quickly became a ‘one to watch’ after winning a silver medal in this event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Munich, Germany, last month.
Now that she’s made her mark at the Olympic Games with a new world record, she’ll be under even more scrutiny in the final.
There have been three previous Olympic records set by Korean shooters.
The first was Ahn Byung-gyun in the men’s air rifle final at Seoul 1988, and the second was Jin Jong-oh in the men’s 50-meter pistol final at Rio de Janeiro 2016.
Ban Hyo-jin became the first Korean woman to make Olympic history.
The Korean shooting team’s morale was at an all-time high.
On the first day of competition, Park Ha-joon (KT)-Kim Ji-hyun (Gyeonggi-do) won an unexpected silver medal in the mixed air rifle event, and on the 28th, Oh Ye-jin (IBK) and Kim Ye-ji (Imsil County) swept the gold and silver medals in the women’s 10-meter air rifle.
Given the mental nature of the sport, expectations are high that Ban Hyo-jin will be able to replicate Yeo Gap-soon’s “gold medal miracle” 32 years ago.
The national shooting team has taken great care to ensure that Ban is able to focus on the competition.
When we asked for an interview with the Olympic record-setter on site, the team asked if we could wait until after the final.
After all the events are over, they have no problem giving interviews for three days and three nights, but they want to make sure that the athletes are focused on the event in front of them.
Ban is not alone. After Ban Hyo-jin’s women’s air rifle final, the men’s air rifle final will be followed at 7 p.m. by the men’s air rifle final with Choi Moo-ri (19-Gyeongnam National University).
In the air rifle main event, he shot 630.8 points to finish fifth and punch his ticket to the finals. 파워볼실시간
